On Friday February 12th between the hours of 2pm and 7pm, new sound system was being installed at a stereo shop located in Culver City, California. In order to install the stereo system, the store owner and the employees had access to the keys of my car for 5 hours. When I came to pick my car up around 7pm, I noticed that my car was sitting unattended in the middle of a vacant parking lot. I checked to see if everything was properly installed and I then proceeded to leave the shop and head to my friends house in westchester. After arriving at my friends house about 10 minutes later after leaving the shop, I opened the back of my car door to get my bags out of the car. I noticed that my backpack containing my "MacBook" laptop computer was missing. I wanted to go back to the store and ask the guy working the shop if they had my backpack with a macbook laptop computer, however, the person working at the store said the shop normally closes at 7pm but he was instructed to close the store right after I picked up my car). I am certain that my backpack containing the "MacBook" laptop computer was stolen on the property of the stereo shop. I am not sure if one of the employees or a random pedestrian stole my property, however, I am certain the incident occurred on the premises of the business. Do I have a valid law suit? Can I take this case to small claims court? The stereo shop owner claims he does not do background checks on his employees. If I could prove that one or more of his employees had a past history of theft, could I win this case? Is the stereo shop still considered liable even if they have a sign stating "We are not responsible for any lost or stolen items"? What evidence/information do I need to obtain in order to make my case stronger? Any helpful information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.... Read More »
