Resolved Question: Info on neighborhoods in California?

I am planning a vacation to California for next month. I am going to be landing in LAX, Los Angeles so I want to get a hotel in that area. There are so many little subareas though and I am having trouble deciding. I keep reading all these things about how there are so many "bad" neighborhoods and what not. I have narrowed it down to Torrance or Culver City. Can anyone tell me more about the safety or those two areas, and also anything else safety wise you may know like areas to avoid, etc....
